Emílio Rui Vilar, born in Oporto, 17 May 1939
Graduated in Law, Coimbra University (1961)
Since May 2002, President of the Board of Trustees of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Partex Oil and Gas (Holdings) Corporation. Since 1996, Chairman of the Audit Commission of the Banco de Portugal.
Presently: President of the Portuguese Foundation Centre, Co-Chairman of “The Global Philanthropy Leadership Initiative”, Trustee of the Initiative “A Soul for Europe”, Senator of the European Cultural Parliament, Founding Member of the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance.
Chairman of the European Foundation Centre (2008-2011), co-opted Trustee of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 1996; Chairman of Galp Energia SGPS (2001-2002); from 1989 to 1996, Chairman and CEO of Caixa Geral de Depósitos (National Savings Bank); General-Commissioner Europalia Portugal (1989-1992); Director General at the European Community Commission, (1986 -1989); Deputy-Governor, Banco de Portugal (1975-85); Minister of Transports and Communications (1976 to 1978); Minister of the Economy (1974 to 1975); Secretary of State for External Trade and Tourism (1974); Founder and first president of SEDES; Manager, Banco Português do Atlântico, from 1969 to 1973.
