Collaborative Care Team in Open Source

Version 1.6,  15 September 2011

Mission Statement

( A ) Medical collaborations:
Multidisciplinary care across Internet:

  • A "patient centric" record shared by the members of his/her multidisciplinary "Care Team".
  • A problem solving approach:  maintenance of an up to date overview of the patient "Problem List", with links to the details explaining why the problem has been identified and which actions haven been started.
  • An iterative care process in which initial problems requiring more examinations will become updated in diagnoses requiring treatments.
  • Initial focus on the most common requirements in most care situations.  Next such a generic patient care platform will be incremented step by step by more specific features in function of particular diseases and medical specialties.
  • Education by means of contextual training:  on the occasion of the encountered problems provide explanations and references to more fundamental knowledge.
  • Role Based Access Control based on the care team, known and accepted by the patient.
  • Anonymous data could be extracted for statistical studies.

( B ) Informatics collaborations
Support of the above medical collaborations

  • Sharing technical know-how about software including source code, i.e. in Open Source.
  • Telemedicine technologies allowing to get help from care team members across Internet, sharing medical know how between developing and developed regions.
  • An integration platform intended to reuse existing medical softwares components availables as open source.
  • A very modular approach, allowing to distribute developments and maintenance across an international community.

Current Projects

Operational IPATH network:

  • World wide working telemedicine platform since 2002, to get healthcare support in developing countries from medical consultants of several specialists area.  As it runs on open source software, there are very low costs if necessary, only for hosting the server. We offer to set up test groups to test the functionality of the platform.
  • For example isolated small health centers send pathology images and get second opinion from pathology experts across Internet.

Experimental Care Team Prototype intended to:

  • Support discussions about medical specifications, in a pragmatic way in front of visual examples.
  • Evaluation of considered integration technologies.

New partners are invited to join:

  • Rather than developing applications in isolation, consider to participate in a community sharing experience and Open Source modules.

 ISfTeH Student Working Group

ISfTeH STUDENTS’ WG MISSION

The ISfTeH  Students’ Working Group aims to promote a free of charge participation of students (up to MSc degree) in Telemedicine and e-Health conferences and other related  initiatives, as well as providing access to recognized experts in the field worldwide. The involvement of a new generation of professionals is considered a key component towards a successful implementation of new technologies in health assistance and education.

Since 2008, thanks to a partnership established between the ISfTeH and Elluminate®, a free of charge license allows the ISfTeH Students’ Working Group to organize  live webconferencing sessions for its student members. The sessions comprises of 5 students’ presentations (around 10min, with 5-10 power-point slides), made via Elluminate®  Multiseat Webconferencing VClass.

A Jury, composed of 3 distinguished and honourable eHealth professionals, traditionally elects the best students’ presentation. In this year, the Jury was comprised of Profs. Malcolm Fisk (UK), Andre Petitet (France) and Maurice Mars (South Africa). In order to promote the participation of students from different countries, Med-e-Tel offers an award for the best webconferencing presentation. The 2011 award was granted to Karolina Krawczac, from Poland, who won a prize of US$1,000.

The ISfTeH Students’ Working Group is very proud to inform that the “4th ISfTeH Students Videoconferencing Session”, held at Med-e-Tel 2011 in Luxembourg, on April 08th, was a total success. In that opportunity five ISfTeH student members, from 3 different countries (Australia, Brazil and Poland), remotely presented the results of their eHealth researches and projects. Through Elluminate® Live Multiseat Vroom, all participant students and both a local and a virtual audience (up to 100 hundred seats) could participate and interact taking advantage of full audio and video Elluminate® facilities, with presentations being transmitted from different and far remote regions of the world. Once again, in this year, 5 presentations were selected for the “Students Session”, as follows:

1. Telepharmacy: Phamaceutical Care in Remote Areas of the Brazilian Amazon Rain Forest, Flavia Fachel, Brazil, flavia_fachel@hotmail.com

2. A Telecardiology Assistance Project in a Remote Region of the Brazilian Amazon, Christopher Jones, Brazil, crjones.crjones@googlemail.com

3. Factors Hindering Utilization of Telemedicine for Delivery of Specialty Care to Rural and Remote Australia, Sakaleshpura Chandrashekar Nanda Kumar, Australia, scnandakumar@gmail.com

4. Willingness to attend Home based exercises supervised over the Internet, Karolina Krawczak, Poland, karolina_krawczak@o2.pl  (*2011 Award Winner)

5. Acceptance and Usability of the Home Based Rehabilitation Internet Platform among Osteoarthritis Patients, Dominika Cabaj, Poland, cabaj.dominika@gmail.com

About the upcoming activities organized towards the Student Members:

The next and exciting opportunity to participate in an Official ISfTeH Students’ Videoconferencing Session - via remote presentation - will be the 2012 edition of Med-e-Tel in Luxembourg (April 18-20,  2012).
